Sleeping in TH — on the mezzanine vs. on the ground floor

When deciding on a tiny house on wheels of about 15 sqm, our customers are faced with the choice of where to locate the sleeping area: on the mezzanine or on the ground floor. Creating a rest area on the mezzanine floor has its unique advantages, but also some disadvantages, which are worth considering at the stage of interior design. The basic pros and cons of placing a bed on the mezzanine and on the ground floor are presented in the following overview.

A bedroom on a mezzanine floor in TH

PROS

1. More space to use on the ground floor

The mezzanine allows you to use effectively the available living space in a tiny house. An additional few square meters of its floor creates a cozy bedroom. At the same time, it frees up ground floor space for kitchen and living room functions. In REDUKT houses, under the mezzanine level there are usually practical closets and bookcases, as well as a technical room, with access from the outside.

2. Privacy and coziness

A mezzanine can offer a greater sense of privacy, especially if the ground floor is a living space shared with the kitchen. Additionally, locating the bed in the higher part of the house creates a cozy atmosphere, conducive to relaxation and tranquility after a long day.

3. Views from the roof window

Sleeping on the mezzanine floor in REDUKT houses, you can look straight at the stars through the roof window. Waking up with a view of the rising sun or falling asleep under a starry sky is an extraordinary experience, adding to the charm of everyday tiny house life.

CONS

1. Limited mezzanine height

One of the main constraints of a mezzanine in a TH is the limited space from the bed level to the ceiling. In our REDUKT houses, the ceiling height from the mezzanine level ranges from about 90 to 140 cm, depending on the model and type of roof. The REDUKT PURA house has a lower mezzanine level which allows you to read or even work on it comfortably. The mezzanine above the bathroom - a typical solution in THOW - doesn't give such comfort. A variety of solutions in different house models allow us to choose the most convenient option.

2. Higher temperature on the mezzanine level

Warm air naturally rises upward, which means that on the mezzanine floor you may experience a slightly higher temperature than on the ground floor. During the warm months of the year, thermal comfort throughout the interior is maintained by air conditioning and proper placement of windows, including roof windows with blinds.

3. Accessibility

To get to the mezzanine in REDUKT houses, it is necessary to use a ladder or stairs, which in some situations can be less convenient than climbing onto a bed located on the ground floor. Although sometimes limiting easy access upstairs for uninvited guests can be a plus of sleeping on a mezzanine ;)

Bedroom on level 0 in ground floor TH

PROS

1. Easy access to every zone - including the sleeping area

Locating the bedroom on the ground floor eliminates the need to climb a ladder or stairs to the bedroom. The simple one-level interior layout also allows children or the elderly to move around the house without any problems.

2. Spaciousness and comfort of the sleeping place

A ground floor bedroom usually offers more overhead space and better air circulation than when the bed is located on a mezzanine. Lovers of comfortable sleeping conditions and long lazy mornings in the sheets will appreciate the bed on trouble-free level 0.

3. Outdoor views through large windows

The ability to enjoy the scenery outside directly from the bed is an added benefit of having the bed on the ground floor. Large windows adjacent to the bed guarantee beautiful views of the surrounding nature, adding to the charm of the interior and creating a sense of closeness to nature.

CONS

1. Less available free living space

A bedroom on the ground floor takes up space that could be used for other purposes. In tiny houses, any extra living space is valuable, so skipping mezzanine space can limit interior design possibilities.

2. Limited privacy in the sleeping area

A ground-floor bedroom can seem less comfortable in terms of privacy, especially when there are more people in the house. Then it is more challenging to create an intimate space, free from distractions, yet the openness of the interior can also be a kind of advantage.

3. Less flexibility in the space arrangement

When deciding on a ground floor bedroom, the interior layout becomes less flexible. It is more difficult to adjust the one-level space to meet changing needs, which can be important in the long-term use of a tiny house.

In conclusion, the choice between locating the sleeping area on a mezzanine or on the ground floor in a trailer house depends on individual needs and preferences. The mezzanine offers you more space on the ground floor and a cozy atmosphere, but comes with some difficulties. A ground-floor bedroom, on the other hand, provides easy access and greater comfort with beautiful views right from the pillow, at the cost of less privacy and limited living space. Each solution has its pros and cons, which are worth considering carefully before choosing solutions for your tiny house on wheels.

The interior of the REDUKT ECHO house

One of the cool things about the REDUKT ECHO house is that it's divided into four "rooms" inside:

  • the luminous and spacious living room and kitchenette,

  • a second separate room under the mezzanine,

  • a bathroom with a shower, cabinet and sink, as well as a toilet,

  • a mezzanine with a desk - a great quiet place to work or relax.

REDUKT ECHO house has two rooms, a kitchen, bathroom, and mezzanine, all of which add up to 14 sqm.

The living room is the biggest space in the house. It's merged with a kitchenette opposite the front door. The kitchen is fully furnished with a fridge, a sink and a cooktop. The living space is designed for comfort and convenience: with a big sofa, storage and a bookcase. Behind the bookcase is another room for those who need their separate space exclusively.

This space can be arranged according to your needs, for an additional bedroom, work area or relaxation space. It has two bookcases with shelves and a closet in an alcove.

Once you've made it up the stairs, you'll find yourself on a mezzanine. If you place a full-size mattress there, you regain a few square meters of usable space at ground zero without sacrificing full sleeping comfort. And if you need your own corner with a work desk, it's there too :)

Tech side of the house

The house is heated with infrared floor foils and a wood-burning stove for a cozy interior climate and all-year use. You can also equip the house with an air conditioning with a heating function. The wooden structure of the house is responsible for proper thermal insulation. It has a mineral wool filling and a highly vapor-permeable membrane, which makes the walls of the house "breathe."

This house is 6.60 m long, 2.55 m wide, and 3.95 m high (including the trailer). You can make the REDUKT ECHO house function autonomously by installing the off-grid package that includes a water tank of up to 100 l with a pump and a solar system with a battery and an inverter.

Mobile multifunctional furniture

The heart of this house is the living room, which is shared with the fully equipped kitchen. This is where you can enjoy the smell of freshly brewed coffee in the morning and the beautiful views outside the wide window. In the afternoons, you can spend time together with your loved ones cooking, sharing food or playing board games at the fold-out table. Mobile multifunctional furniture works perfect in this space.

The sofa bed is a great piece of furniture that serves not only as additional sleeping space, but also as a capacious pull-out drawer for clothes, shoes, towels, and linens. The steps leading to the mezzanine are also storage compartments: a drawer in the lower step and three boxes opening from the front, in which you can store a suitcase and a hiking backpack.

There's another cabinet hidden above the sofa in an alcove under the mezzanine. It's a great place to store board games, books, electronic devices and even a blanket.

In the rest area, on the mezzanine, you will find a full-size mattress, as well as shelves for books, candles and small personal items. Everything you need for a good night's rest is within your reach – even the stars at the night sky, which you can admire through the roof window.
